KEGERATOR

December 21st, 2011

So the very lovely @sunrisesister and @fernit sold me a huge wicked fridge perfect for Kegeration.

The grand plan is four taps.

Pics below

Edit: Finished it on the 23/12.

New Brews 101/102

December 20th, 2011

So Kahler Breweries 2.0 gets underway with two new Fresh Wort kits. I never took much notice of how many/what I brewed at the old place. I’m going to start numbering my brews starting now.

These aren’t the Mountain Goat worts I’ve been getting from Grape and Grain, I bought these form Brewer’s Den in Boronia (though I’ve also spotted them at Keg King in Springvale). They’re made in  NSW brewery.

Recipes below.

Brew # 101:

Fresh Wort: “Amarillo Pale Ale”

+ 6 litres of water (to 21L)

Yeast: Safale US-05 dry ale yeast

Pitch Temp: 26 degrees

OG: 1038

FG: 1006

Ferment Temp: 18 degrees for 12 days. Crash cooled to 4 degrees for another two days

Brew Number 102:

Fresh Wort: 15L Norwest Ale (Bloke in the HBS compared it to Sierra Nevada Pale)

+ 6 litres of water (to 21L)

Yest: Safale US-05

Pitch temp: 26 degrees

OG: 1034

FG: 1008

Ferment temp: 18 degrees for 12 days, crash cooled for another two

Additions: 25G Cascade pellets at +3 days.

We’re in the CCing phase now, I keg on Thursday, should be right to drink by NYE.

$16 25L fermenters at Bunnings!

December 20th, 2011

They call them “Water Storage Drums” but if you’re doing 21L brews or something that isn’t going to foam up too much, they’re bloody cheap fermenters.

Even if you’re just using them for racking you can’t go wrong.

Food grade, no airlock obviously but I don’t use one anyway.

Thermostat!

Jono asked me for some pics of the thermostat I bought/made to regulate the temperature in my brew fridge. Here goes:

Leftover Galaxy Brew

August 6th, 2011

This week’s brew recipe was largely driven by the following factors:

* I haven’t brewed in about five weeks (AAAAAAGES for me)

* I had a bunch of left over stuff that hadn’t made it into other brews

* I’ve never brewed with Galaxy hops and wanted to give it a go

So, what I’m using today is

1x 1.5k can of Cooper’s Australian Pale Ale

1x box (1kilo) of Coopers Brew Enhancer 2 (BE2) (whisked into approx 3 litres of water while I wait for my boil to start)

20g of Galaxy hop pellets at -20 minutes

20g of Galaxy hop pellets at +3 days

Welcome!

June 7th, 2010

Hello!

Yet another weblog – while I’ve always tried to amalgamate all my interests in one blog, this time around I’m splitting them up. This one here, in case you can’t tell from the URL, is my beer blog. My hobby for 2010 is homebrewing and like most geeks, there’s no half arsed. I’m onto brew six or so (I’m tardy with getting my blog going) and I’ve already invested $400 or so in equipment, brewing fridges, a keg setup, temperature control and monitoring, pots, bottle washing equipment and so on.

This little blog is going to a) give me an outlet to share my new passion and b) act as a personal record for me (if I manage to keep it updated) so in six or twelve months time I can come back and look at how far I’ve come.

So, on with it – welcome to KahlerBreweries.com :)

(While there’s not much content here yet, there’s quite a few photos on Tumblr at tumblr.kahlerbreweries.com)

Hooray!
